------- Additional Comments From vsync@wego.com 11/16/00 16:36 ------- Done. Please ensure that Word is not used to generate documents in the future. Word generates gratuitiously incompatible HTML, including the use of "special characters" that only appear correctly on Micros~1 platforms. In many cases, the results alter the meaning of sentences, which can be disastrous in a legal document. In addition, Word ignores the elements built into HTML for structural markup and does its own visual markup, badly. This makes the result dependant on the user agent and also removes any ability to do structural parsing of the document. This makes utilizing the site especially difficult for blind users, who may use auditory user agents. Word also explicitly specifies the font to be used, which makes the text unreadable on most platforms, and also sets fonts that are much too small for online reading. It is worth noting that a disabled user successfully sued the International Olympic Committee for having broken and unusable content on their site. Finally, I suspect our contract might be open to legal challenges if it is incorrectly formatted. If we specify that it is "available on the World Wide Web", that strongly implies that it follows Web standards. If the user attempted in good faith to access the document, but was unable to or received garbled content, he or she might legitimately claim that he was unaware of the terms and unable to follow them. It took quite a while to fix this mess... Could the person(s) responsible please see about working with someone who knows HTML for future revisions of this document, to avoid this waste of time in the future? Thanks...
