I'm mostly libertarian and I support Ron Paul. One of the areas I'm skeptical is that I think antitrust regulations provide a valuable check on unfair competition. The most efficient marketplace is a monopoly. The problem is that in many cases once a supplier attains monopoly status, he has power to create barriers to entry. Then prices can rise and innovation is stifled. That said, you make an excellent point that Microsoft is a poor example of a free market corporation. Microsoft's tools and formats are as entrenched as they are because of use by schools and governments. They have fought tooth and nail in every case where voters or legislatures have sought to require OpenDocument or, more generally, standardized formats. This is inappropriate. Schools should teach theory, not harness students to industry. Whenever possible, government documents should be available to all citizens, and interaction with the government should not be limited to those that have paid their dues to a protected monopoly corporation. There is no technical reason why governments cannot begin producing their documents using standardized formats rather than inadequately documented proprietary ones.
